Prerequisite:

It is recommended that you know how to type and have previous computer experience—preferably COT 202 or experience using a version of MicroSoft Office

Transferability of Course within Nevada:  Transfers as a general elective.

Linkage of course to educational program mission and outcomes:  This course is one of the degree requirements for the AAS in one of three degrees in Computer Technology.  Upon completion of this course students will have a skill set necessary for further study in computer technology and with successful completion of the course are able to test successfully on certification standards in this specialty program.

 

Course Performance Objectives

Expert MicrosoftÒ Office 2003 is structured for one-semester courses focusing on the advanced features of the major applications in the suite. The text is designed around the following performance objectives:

  • Analyze, synthesize, and evaluate school, work, or home situations and apply technology to complete information-processing tasks efficiently and effectively.
  • Use and customize the capabilities of the operating system utilities to solve interface and operational issues.
  • Access the Internet and learn to use the browse, search, and hyperlink capabilities of Web browsers.
  • Create, design, and produce professional documents using word processing software (Word).  Functions include formatting with special features, working with shared documents, creating specialized tables and indexes, using macros and styles, and integrating clip art, graphics, and charts.
  • Process, manipulate, represent, and analyze numeric data using spreadsheet software (Excel).  Functions include using advanced formatting techniques, entering advanced math functions, working with lists, using the analysis tools, collaborating with workgroups, and importing and exporting data.
  • Use Word Art to create organizational charts and draw and format objects in Word and Excel.    
  • Plan, structure, and create databases for efficient data access and retrieval using the advanced functions of database software (Access).  Functions include: modifying tables and forms, refining queries, using advanced report functions, and defining relationships.   
  • Devise and execute strategies for merging and integrating source data from different applications, using the commands for object linking and embedding files.
  • Sharing data and using XML and schemas.

These objectives will be reached by completing at least 10 hours of lab work a week, participating in bulletin board discussions, chat sessions, chapter quizzes, completing all reading assignments and chapter learning exercises, computer Assessments and Unit Assessments, and completing 3 Unit Objective Tests.

 

ATTENDANCE and TESTING

Tests will cover class notes, lab work, and reading assignments.  They will be open book, open note.  Four synchronous online chats are required, as is participation in bulletin board discussions.  I will poll the class to see when might be the most compatible time to meet in Chat Room 1.

 

GRADING

Your final grade will be computed by averaging together the following grades:

 

Three objective tests =

15%

Assignment points on chats, bulletin board discussions, end-of-chapter assessments =

35%

Six Unit Computer Tests (Unit Assessments) =

35%

Online Chapter Quizzes =

15%

 


The following percentage grade scale will be used:

 

94 - 100 = A

73 - 76 = C

90 - 93 = A-

70 - 72 = C-

87 - 89 = B+

67 - 69 = D+

83 - 86 = B

63 - 66 = D

80 - 82 = B-

60 - 62 = D-

77 - 79 = C+

Below 60 = W

If after the midterm, a "W" is at the instructor's discretion. Note: It is the student's responsibility to notify both the school and the instructor of a withdrawal. Failure to notify both the instructor and the school may result in a grade of "F".

 

ALL ASSIGNMENTS AND TESTS MUST BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE SEMESTER IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE COURSE!

 

SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENTS

Students will not print their assignments, but will submit their work as attachments in the appropriate WebCT Assignment Drop Box.  All Chapter and Unit Assessments,  will be zipped into a file with the title “Chapter 1 or Chapter 2”, or Word Unit 1, etc.)  They must be clearly labeled.  If your work is not labeled, it will be returned to you for proper labeling. All assignments must be turned in no later than two (2) weeks after their due date, with all assignments turned in by May. 19. The objective tests will be posted on the WebCT bulletin Board and will be open book, open note.  The Quizzes will be online.
