My Hobbies

Our House Dave and I bought a house about a year and a half ago.  Since that time, I spent much of my trying to decorate it, landscaping it, and making plans for future projects.  What has truly surprised me is how much I enjoy doing all of this.  Therefore, my hobbies currently seem to include house improvement projects and house decorating projects.

Bushes
As part of my landscaping technique, I had decided to use bushes to conceal unattractive areas of our yard.  We have the neighborhood power-box in one corner and I have planted, a lavender bush (pictured), a lilac bush, and a Russian sage to try and hide it in future years.  I choose these particular plants because of their purple blossom, which I believe will provide a uniform cover.
Flowers
The previous two summers, I have planted many different types of seeds as various borders. However, this fall I decided that I was tired of how the seeds looked once they grew and planted 260 bulbs, as well as some perennials. The rose bush was here when we moved in, but I have been having a hard time figuring out the proper way to care for it—but keep trying!
Trees
We currently have nine trees in our yard.  They include the trees which were already there when we moved into the house; a nectarine tree, two birches, and three evergreens.  Dave and I have made our own contribution in the form of a flowering cherry tree (pictured) and a weeping willow.  We still intend to purchase one more tree and, provided that they all live, we will be complete with the tree aspect of the landscaping.  We chose the willow tree because it will grow to be 80 ft. tall and 50 ft. wide.  The cherry tree was chosen because of its beautiful blossoms in the spring.
Themes
Reno and Sparks provides ample opportunities to purchase unusual decoration items, as there always seems to be an event going on during the summer weekends.  We enjoy looking at the booths when we attend, and as a result have developed a theme in the living room around blue suns, or just suns.  Off to the left side is one of the sun items that we have purchased.  This particular one is made of tin and we met the creator at the time we purchased it. I'm really starting to believe that artists are getting more and more commercial!
Backyard
This is a picture of our backyard.  Real attractive and fun, isn’t it?  Well, we don’t think so.  Next summer we plan to take care of that though.  We are planning on tilling the soil, purchasing higher-grade soil to mix in, and then to lay sod.  But before we can even do that, we need to dig trenches for the sprinkler system.  What a lot of work!  Two summers from now, we are going to be working on that hill in back.  What, you may think, can you possibly do with that thing?  Well, we are going to build some retaining walls and create a vegetable garden and horse-shoe pit.  Now that will be fun!
