Interests:
- Reading-I love to read,
especially non-fiction with an emphasis on biographies and
autobiographies. What can I say? I am a lifelong
learner! My current book recommendation: "Marley and Me" by John
Grogan. What a delightful book! If you enjoy animals and are especially
drawn to those of the canine variety, you will find this book happy,
sad, amusing, touching, etc. At the moment I am reading a book by Dr.
Henry Lee (who has appeared as a forensic expert in many well-known
trials and also on TV in his own series) entitled, "Cracking More
Cases," in which he discusses, among others, the Jon Benet Ramsey
murder. It's a book that my nephew got me for my birthday. What is
unique about it is that it is autographed by Dr. Lee! My nephew,
attending the University of New York at Brockport and pursuing a
criminal justice degree, headed up a committee to bring Dr. Lee to the
campus to speak. So, he was fortunate to spend most of three days with
the man during his visit to Brockport.
- Golf-I enjoy getting
out on the course early in the morning, when the dew is still on the
ground and the temperature is comfortable, to play nine holes with my
husband. While there are not many golfers on the course at that
hour, the robins and jackrabbits, as well as occasionally the cows and
deer, accompany us as we "recreate". I have not played much golf
in the last few years due to time constraints, but I still love the
game.
- Computer graphics-The day
goes by quickly when I am involved in doing projects in
Publisher, Photoshop, or other computer graphics
programs. It is so much fun and gives me the opportunity to
express myself creatively! Just recently, I took advantage of the
opportunity to learn the Nvu web publishing program with Leonard
MacKey. It doesn't hurt to keep up with the technology. In
fact, taking the short-term class helped me to update my web page after many
years of neglect!
- Movies-Going to see films
is a relatively inexpensive form of entertainment for my husband and
me. Although our tastes in movies differ, we look forward to the
time spent together. One of my favorite films for this year was
"Da Vinci Code" about which most people know something. I first read
the book and was pleasantly surprised to find the film followed the
story line very closely.
- Classical music-My favorite composers are Mozart,
Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. I am especially fond of Baroque or Renaissance music.
I regularly tune in to 88.7 or 90.5, the public broadcasting FM radio stations in
our area, to listen to classical selections.
Hobbies:
- Calligraphy-A friend who is extremely adept at
this skill first introduced me to calligraphy. I have completed a few projects but
don't always make the effort to develop
my abilities here.
- Collecting wolf sculptures and prints-I have quite
a few howling wolf sculptures crafted in various mediums and also a couple of
prints. I become interested in wolves in the early 1980's after reading "Of
Wolves and Men" by Barry Lopez
which enlightened me to the misconceptions about their nature. I
sponsored the care of a wolf, Lakota, through the Wolf Education
Research Center. Last year Lakota, old and isolated from the
pack, passed away.
- Collecting sunset/sunrise or tree or and waterfall/stream wall
hangings-Being among the natural elements of our world is a source of wonder
to me, so I bring some of it home with me in the form of paintings, photos, needlework,
etc.
Activities:
- Playing the piano-I learned how to play when I was
only 8 years old and, in total, took five years of formal instruction. I play mostly
for my own relaxation (since I get very nervous trying to entertain others) but am
grateful to my parents for introducing me to and encouraging me in this skill.
- Gardening-After my husband and I completed an
organic gardening class at WNCC,
we weren't as intimidated by the thought of starting and maintaining a
backyard garden. Lack of time sometimes keeps us from having one
every year. Also, I find that, the older I get, the harder it is to get
down on my knees and most difficult is getting back up again!
- Writing-I used to write poetry and have been told
I compose interesting annual Christmas newsletters. It is an ambition of mine to
someday write "the great American novel" or a non-fiction book on a subject of
personal interest to me. Maybe someday - like when I retire!
(After reading "Marley and Me," I told my husband I might want to write a book
about our two dogs. He even suggested a title, "SALT," with a subtitle of
"Shadow and Lucky Together." We have so many stories to tell about these two
critters!
