Welcome to New Students
Congratulations to all the new students at UNR.These are few things we would like to suggest for new Indian students coming to Reno.
This list is focused on general enquires that new Indian students used to have. Remember this is not the COMPLETE shopping list. There are lot things we are missing here. We just want to advice you in few aspects where you will generally face trouble in deciding.
Travel
2 big suitcases (each 23 kgs ) and one hand bag ( 7 kgs ). Do confirm with airlines about baggage allowance. Ticket should be taken to Reno Tahoe International Airport ( airport code : RNO ). Flying via pacific(singapore/malaysia/Hongkong/seoul) is advised.
Shopping list
Food Items : Don’t bring any fresh food items. Pickles are allowed and try to get them as much as you can. Make sure they are properly sealed. Clothing : Get atleast 4 pair of jeans, 2 pairs formals, bunch Tshirts and few shorts. Jackets are really not necessary. Pair of shoes and chappals are needed. Bedsheets are advisable if weight permits. You usually go for laundry for two weeks. So plan according to that. Cooking utensils are advised. Pressure pan and Cooker are the important things.
Money and documents needed
Try to carry in the form of DD or travelers cheques. Don’t carry more than 200 USD in cash. Try to get some change for phone calls and food if necessary in the transit time. Try to get total of 2000USD other than your tuition fees. Tuition fee is about 7600 USD a semester if you don’t have funding or assistantship. It would be around 700 USD per semester if you have funding (this is rough calculation for 9 credit course work) Medical documents needed - TT, MMR (2 doses).Check with OISS for more information. Keep your I20, Passport, Travel Ticket, money in a pouch.
Pick up and accommodation
Inform your arrival details to ISO to arrange a pick-up from RNO(Reno Tahoe International Airport atleast two weeks before your arrival. ISO will try to arrange you a temporary accomodation if available.)
Academic advice
Contact an Indian student from your department (check with current members of ISO) for the books you need to get from India and discuss your research interests, funding prospects and choosing courses and advisors.
