Checking In

Upon Your Arrival, the first place you should visit is International student office located in 1st floor, Mackay Science Building.. Your arrival will be acknowledged and you will receive the schedule for the events which will help the new students to start faithful life in Reno, like Orientation(s), Vaccination, Health Center 's info, etc.

The second stop, although this is not necessary but it is considered as a good idea to stop by your departments and say hello to those in Secretary Office and ask them if there is an event you have to attend and don't forget to check who is your adviser. In some departments, they have separated orientations, and all advisors (including yours, dudes..!!) will be there. So dress nicely and try to smile a lot but not too much. Feel free to ask questions to your advisors. Usually, they are nice (at least in the first day, but beyond that, it depends.. just kidding).

If you need someone to walk you through those stop, please feel free to contact TSA officials. These characters are more than willing to give any kind of assistances. (My advice: Free meals)

Social Security Number

This is important. The social security number is the number issued by the office of social security (direct enough?). When you get this number, you are registered to the on-line system of the US. government. Well, desperately, you are tracked. Anyway, there is much more benefit for this because this number is frequently required for verification such as applying for credit/charge cards, some identification cards, health insurerances, car insurerance, long/international distance telephone, etc. Consult the Office of International Students and Scholars for more information.

Student Identification Card (ID)

The location is in the JTSU building. Needless to say, the ID card is for registration, borrow books from the library for the purpose of identification.

Driver License/Nevada ID

If you want to have a car, you need this ID. It will be two parts of the test you have to pass; the written exam and driving exam. The booklet can be picked up at the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicle) or the office of International student. It will help you to study the traffic laws before taking a test. Then you ask for the test, schedule the test, take a test with 10 mistakes allowed. If you can do this, you will be able to take a driving test. Anyway, it is a good idea for you to apply for the international license before you come here. So you can practice your driving skill before getting applied for NV Driver license. Otherwise if you want to practice driving in the "right" side, you will have to apply for the Instruction permit instead of directly apply for the driving license in order to legally practice their driving. Moreover, you will need to be accompanied by the other guy who already has NV Driver license when you drive the car with an instruction permit. So, Why pay twice (in NV, you can help our nation by pay one in Thai and other in Nevada)

Health Insurance

It 's compulsory now to have an insurance with the company provided by the University. However, if you want to choose the company by yourself, you can ask for the exempt by filing a request at the Health Center.

Any further questions or needs for assistance can be direct to TSA's officer members.
