Itlaian Sewing Women in Brooklyn

Here is a picture of Italian women in New York. It was common for Italian immigrant women in the 1930's to take jobs as seamstresses. In fact, Bisnoni and her sister, Catina, would often take up sewing jobs to bring in extra money during the Great Depression.

Breadline

Here is a picture of men waiting for food in a breadline. This was a typical sight during the Great Depression since many people did not have enough money to buy food.

duststorm

Here is a picture of a 1935 dust storm in Oklahoma. It is speculated that much of the economic distress of the Great Depression was brought on by a drought - or severe lack of rain. The drought made it impossible for farmers to grow their crops and, since agriculture was (and still is) the largest industry in the U.S. at that time, it had a very negative impact on the economic climate of that time.

After the storm

Here is a picture of a farmer's field after a dust storm. Good topsoil, along with seeds and crops, would blow off of one farmers field and land in another's.

Homeless Family

Here is a picture of a homeless farm family who has just lost their farm. As a result of the drought, farmers who were unable to grow their crops could not make enough money to keep their farms. So farms were often sold in auctions and farm families were left homeless.
