Uploading Files onto WebCT
You may upload files, such as
Word documents that contain syllabi, onto the WebCT server so that students may
view the files when they are logged into WebCT. This is a three-part process that involves creating an HTML file,
uploading the file into the WebCT file manager, and then updating the content
module in which the file will appear. You must have instructor access to WebCT to carry out these
instructions.
Step 1:
Creating an HTML File in MS Word
- Open Microsoft Word.
- Create the file you wish to upload onto the
server. You may also open an
existing file and proceed with the following directions.
-
Save the file as an HTML file by clicking
on File, Save As.
From the Save as type pull-down menu, choose Web Page. Click on Save. This will save your file as an HTML
file. You now have an HTML file
that can be loaded onto the WebCT server.
Step 2:
Uploading an HTML File into WebCT’s File Manger
- Open up your Internet browser (e.g. Explorer,
Netscape).
- Go to http://webct.unr.edu.
- Click on Log on to My WebCT.
- Enter your WebCT User Name and Password into the
appropriate dialogue boxes and click OK.
- Choose the course to which you wish to add the
file from the Courses menu.
- Choose Manage Files from the scroll bar on the
left side of your screen.
- Under My Files, click on the check box next to
the folder into which you will upload your file.
- Under File Options, make sure the Upload File
radio button is selected and click on GO.
- Browse for the file you wish to upload by
clicking on Browse. Select
the file you wish to upload and click on Upload. You should now see the file listed
under the folder into which it was uploaded. However, it is not yet visible to your students. The following step will show you how to
update the WebCT content module so that the file will appear in your
students’ view.
Step 3: Updating the Content Module: File will Appear in Students’ View
- Go to the homepage of the course to which you are
adding the file by clicking on Homepage under the Course Menu on
the left side of the screen. Click
the Designer Options radio button at the top of the page so that
you are in designer view.
- Click on a link underneath the Content Module to
which you wish to add the file. If
there are more Content Modules within this Content Module, continue
selecting Content Modules until you are in the desired spot into which the
file will be placed. A Table of
Contents heading should appear on this page if you are in Designer
Options view.
-
Under the Table of Contents, select the
radio button next to the folder into which you will place your file.
- Under the Add or Delete Items menu on the right
side of the page, select the radio button next to Add file. Click on Go.
- Click on Browse and your files that are
loaded onto the WebCT server (as done in step 2) will appear under My
Files.
- Locate the file you uploaded and click the radio
button next to it to select it.
Then click on Pick.
You will return to the Add File page and the file you chose should
be in the File name dialogue box.
Click on Add. The
file you added will appear in the Table of Contents.
- To alter the file’s location within the
Contents, locate the Reorganize Table of Contents menu on the right side
of the screen (make sure you’re in Designer view). Select the radio button next to the
file and the radio button next to the command you wish to impose on the
file and click GO.
- To change the titles of your files, click the
radio button next to Edit Titles under the Edit menu on the right
side of the screen (make sure you’re in Designer view). Click on GO and a series of
dialogue boxes will appear that hold the titles of your files. Make the necessary changes and click
on Update. The changes
will appear in the Table of Contents.
- Click on Update Student View.
- Click on the radio button next to Update
changes to text, colors, and Action Menu.
Then click on Update.
Until you do this, students will not be able to see the changes you’ve
made.
- Return to the course component to which you added
the file by clicking on the return link at the top of the page.
- Click the View radio button at the top of
the page to enter Student view.
Your file should appear in the location in which you placed
it. Voila! You now have uploaded a file onto
WebCT!
