UNR CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION: Basic statistics
methods in the field of education and related disciplines. Meets licensure
requirements for those areas in education requiring a background in statistics.
Textbooks
Required: Sprinthall, R.C. (2007). Basic Statistical Analysis (8th ed.) & SPSS 16.0 CD Pkg. ISBN-13: 978-0-205-63149-0. Publisher is Allyn & Bacon. (Check the ISBN by turning the book over and looking at the code on the sticker on the back.)
NOTE
The above is a special package put together by the publishers. It includes the textbook, and it also includes a CD that contains the software you will need called SPSS FOR WINDOWS - STUDENT VERSION. If you purchase from the bookstore, it will be the correct package IF YOU BUY THE BOOK LISTED FOR MADDUX ONLY! (Do NOT buy the one for Dr. D'Andreas class!). If you purchase from the Internet, make sure you are puchasing the package that includes SPSS - not just the textbook and a CD of problems to work on.
Required: Assorted assigned readings, primarily on the World Wide Web, plus handouts I will provide for you to download.
Required: A number of exercises using the SPSS software. The full professional version of the SPSS for WINDOWS software is installed on about 32 of the
computers in our COE Computer Lab (some in each room of the lab), and you are welcome
to use these machines. If you want to run the SPSS for WINDOWS programs
you will need to purchase the package identified above, or learn to run it on the Internet from the Library Server (see below).
SPSS GRADUATE PACK
The Student Version of SPSS is all you will need to complete this course. However, it is somewhat limited in what it will do, and it will work for only a limited time (usually, one year). If you want the full capability of SPSS, you can purchase the SPSS Graduate Pack for about $200. The bookstore can order this for you or you can find a copy on the Internet, sometimes for a better price. If you are a Mac User, there is no student version - see below for what to do if you are a Mac user.
USING SPSS FOR FREE ON THE UNR LIBRARY SERVER
It is possible to run the full version of SPSS for free on a server that belongs to the UNR library. This is somewhat cumbersome however, and you can only do it if you are working from a computer with an Internet connection. Also, before the software will run like this, you must first download a special driver from the site and install it on the computer you are using (a one-time task). Also, getting a printout can be a problem. Here is what to do to take advantage of this resource:
1. Login with your NetID account name and password at: https://apollo.library.unr.edu/Citrix/MetaFrame/auth/login.aspx.
2. Access to programs on the Citrix servers requires a small web plugin be installed on your computer.
a. Get the latest ICA Web plugin for Windows 2000, XP and Vista here: https://apollo.library.unr.edu/ica32t.exe
b. Get the latest ICA client for Mac OSX here
https://apollo.library.unr.edu/MacICA_OSX.dmg.zip. Mac users must use FireFox as a browser to ensure correct functionality.
3. When prompted, be sure to select FULL ACCESS and ASK ME EVERYTIME.
4. After installing the plugin (a one-time chore), whenever you visit the site, scroll down the list of software until you find SPSS and open it.
5. You can then enter data and run analyses in the same way you would do if you had the software installed on your computer.
6. Print as usual. If this does not work, it is probably because you failed to select Full Access when you installed the driver. In this case, uninstall the driver and reinstall it. If you simply cannot get regular printing to work, you will have to copy any output, paste into WORD, and print from WORD. NOTE - A STANDARD COPY AND PASTE WON'T WORK. Instead, here is what to do:
a. With the SPSS material you want to print on the screen, click EDIT and SELECT ALL. Boxes will appear around everything on the screen.
b. Now click EDIT and COPY OBJECTS (NOT just plain "copy.")
c. Now, without closing SPSS, open a word processor such as MICROSOFT WORD.
d. In WORD, click on EDIT and PASTE. The material will then be pasted into WORD.
e. Print out the material from WORD in the usual way.
TUTORIALS ON USING SPSS ON THE CITRIX SERVER
Here are links to the two tutorials. Select the first if you use a Windows machine, the second if you use a Mac. Of course, you will need the free Adobe Reader software to view these, but you should all have that installed on your computers at this point:
Get Citrix_SPSS_Windows.pdf
Get Citrix_SPSS_Mac.pdf
ATTENTION MAC USERS
There is no student version of the SPSS program for a Macintosh computer. So, what are your options if you are a Mac user?
1.
You can try to run the version on the library server (see the section above and click on the tutorial above for the Mac).
2.
You could purchase the GRADUATE PACK for the Macintosh. It costs $199 - see the Computer Den in the UNR bookstore to order it. You can also purchase it online. Here is what the SPSS Web site says about purchasing the GRADUATE PACK for the Macintosh:
"Your campus bookstore may order copies of the SPSS Graduate Pack directly from SPSS Inc. Students have the option to purchase the SPSS Graduate Pack on-line at www.journeyed.com (search for SPSS in the search field), www.academicsuperstore.com (search for SPSS in the search field), www.studentdiscounts.com, or lease a copy for 6 or 12 months at www.e-academy.com." (The SPSS Web page on the Graduate Pack from which this quote came can be found at http://www.spss.com/gradpack/.
I tried the second site above (the Academic Superstore) and found it listed for $199.00. In the past, some students have found it used on Ebay or Amazon.com for a cheaper price.
The other possibility is to run it from the library server (See the section above titled USING SPSS FOR FREE ON THE LIBRARY SERVER.) Be sure to first download the driver for use on a Macintosh, then follow the instructions above. The Mac tutorial listed in the section before this one gives step-by-step instructions. Once again, the library server can be found at:
