                                                                                                                        Materials Advantage Research Society

What is MARS?

MARS is a student run academic and professional society to further the opportunities of students studying Material Science and Engineering (MSE) at the University of Nevada, Reno campus. MARS provides exposure to the different specialties in the MSE major and provides students the opportunity to have access to many key players in the MSE field.

Who should join MARS?

Anyone! A student who is interested in material science and engineering is always welcome at our meetings. Currently all materials students are members of MARS, which makes it a great way to meet your colleagues.

Why study MSE?

MSE is a new and upcoming area of study, which also equates into many opportunities for students in and out of college. MSE has broad specialties from biology to robotics to fuel cells and even nano-materials.

Opportunities ?

MARS helps students reach their full potential by providing opportunities of networking with top officials. Also allows students to understand their major by enlightening them on the various areas of interest in MSE.

MARS Activities?

MARS meets one time in every month on first or second Friday noon time to discus the activities of students in Material Science. All meetings are provided with free food (Pizza). We end each semester with a Dept. BBQ party. MARS helps to get scholarships to students to attend workshops and conferences. For more information check the website.

What are some popular topics in MSE?

ü      Fuel Cells

·         Hydrogen storage

·         Organic-inorganic nano-structured photovoltaic cells

·  Networking
Get involved in your student chapter to meet other engineering students and professionals. It's a great way to make new friends and start forming a network of contacts that can help you throughout your career.

·  Financial Support
Every year, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering dept sponsors the students for the annual meetings such as TMS, MRS..etc..

·  Leadership Development
As you work through the various levels of chapter management, you gain valuable leadership skills that will help you throughout your career, as a team member, as a professional manager and as a leader.

·  BBQ & Free Pizza!!
Every semester after the First student meeting there will be BBQ party and in every meeting free Pizza will be served.

·  Guest Lectures
Every semester there will be guest lectures from the faculty or from people from industries, National Labs who are involved in Materials research.

·  Fund Raising
For the activities of the group every semester funds will be raised by selling Beer at the Football games, Car wash, and by BBQ sale.
