(EC/ODE)BYLAWS
Approved April 22, 1998I. BYLAWS AND ORGANIZATION
A. The Economics Club/Omicron Delta Epsilon, hereinafter referred to as EC/ODE, is an approved organization of students and faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno, under the sponsorship of the Department of Economics. It consists of two components:II. MEMBERSHIP, DUES, AND PARTICIPATION1. The Economics Club, an organization of students and faculty interested in the field of economics, its real-world applications, and the activities and careers of those who have studied or used it.B. These bylaws shall govern the organization of EC/ODE, the requirements for membership, the duties and requirements of its officers, and its activities.2. The Alpha of Nevada Chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon, an international honor society that recognizes scholastic achievement and promotes scholarly activities in the field of economics.
C. These bylaws shall be in force upon a majority vote of student members at a regular business meeting of EC/ODE, and subsequent approval by the faculty advisor.
D. These bylaws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of student members at a regular business meeting of EC/ODE, and subsequent approval by the faculty advisor.
A. Student MembershipIII. OFFICERS AND MEETINGS1. Student membership in the Economics Club is open to any interested student who wishes to participate in its activities.B. Dues for members of the Economics Club are set at $3 per semester, or $5 per year. New members of the honor society are required to pay a fee of $35, $30 of which goes to the international honor society headquarters and $5 of which are the first-year dues in the Economic Club. Only dues-paying members have voting rights.2. Student membership in the honor society is limited to those who have completed a minimum of 12 UNR credits of economics or applied economics courses (not including statistics), with a minimum 3.0 grade point average in economics and overall, and who have received a recommendation of a faculty member in the department of economics or the department of applied economics and statistics. All students initiated into the honor society are automatically members of the Economics Club.
C. Participation in EC/ODE activities shall not be limited to dues-paying members, but shall instead be open to all interested students.
A. The Department of Economics shall provide a Faculty Advisor for EC/ODE, whose duties shall include acting as liaison with the Department of Economics and the Department of Applied Economics and Statistics, assisting the officers with advice or help when necessary, and ensuring that the organization acts in the interest of the Department of Economics and the students and faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno.B. Officers shall include a President, an Undergraduate Vice-President, a Graduate Vice-President, a Secretary, and a Treasurer. All officers are required to be active members of the Economics Club, and must participate regularly in EC/ODE activities.
1. The President of EC/ODE shall be an undergraduate student and also a member of the honor society. Though responsibility for EC/ODE membership and activities shall be delegated to subordinate officers, the President is ultimately responsible for the quality and continuation of the organization. The President shall act as chair of all EC/ODE meetings and host of all EC/ODE activities.C. Officers shall hold at least two regular business meetings per semester, not including summer. These meetings shall be held at a reasonable time, shall be open to all EC/ODE members, and the agenda must be announced to the membership at least a week in advance. Election or removal of officers must be included on the announced agenda.2. The Undergraduate Vice-President shall be an undergraduate student, but does not have to be a member of the honor society. He or she is responsible for recruiting members for the Economics Club, as well as planning and organizing general EC/ODE activities. He or she shall also act as the liaison to other student groups.
3. The Graduate Vice-President shall be a graduate student and a member of the honor society. He or she shall be responsible for recognizing outstanding students of economics and inviting them to become members of the honor society, for promoting scholarly activities of the honor society, and for planning a program of particular interest to graduate students.
4. The Secretary shall be an undergraduate student, but does not have to be a member of the honor society. The Secretary is responsible for keeping current and potential EC/ODE members informed about the organization and its activities. The Secretary is also responsible for keeping records up-to-date, and maintaining the approved status of the organization with the Associated Students of the University of Nevada.
5. The Treasurer may be either an undergraduate or a graduate student, and does not have to be a member of the honor society. The Treasurer is responsible for collecting dues, making deposits, and keeping records of the organization's revenues, expenses, and accounts. At least once per semester, the Treasurer shall report to the members of EC/ODE on the organization's financial status.
D. Elections of officers shall be held at the final regular business meeting of each semester, not including summer, and shall be conducted by the President under supervision of the Faculty Advisor. Officers shall be elected by a majority vote of members present. If no person receives a majority on the initial ballot, there shall be a second runoff ballot between the two candidates with the most votes. The Faculty Advisor shall vote only to break a tie.
E. Officers may be removed from office by a two-thirds vote of those members present at a regular business meeting. The Faculty Advisor may also remove officers or appoint interim officers when necessary. Interim officers are not required to meet the qualifications listed in section III.B of these bylaws, and may serve until the next regular election.
F. The Faculty Advisor may be removed by a two-thirds vote of members present at a regular business meeting, and the officers or members of EC/ODE must then petition the Chair of the Department of Economics in writing to request a new Faculty Advisor.
