Euthyphro

1. What is the connection between the subject of this dialogue and the charges brought against Socrates?

2. What seems to be Socrates' attitude toward Euthyphro?

3. How would you characterize the process of definition and redefinition through which Socrates leads Euthyphro? What is wrong with the answers Euthyphro gives? What kind of answer is Socrates trying to elicit from him?

4. In 14c, Socrates says that Euthyphro was at the point of teaching him the answer to his question about the nature of piety, but he turned away. Reviewing the previous passages of the dialogue, can you identify the point Socrates is referring to?

5. Why does Euthyphro suddenly discover that he's in a hurry and must leave?

Apology

1. What is the purpose of Socrates' defense? How does he approach it? How would you describe his attitude toward the jury? What is he trying to accomplish?

2. What role did the god Apollo play in Socrates' decision to pursue philosophy in the streets and marketplace of Athens? Why does he describe his philosophizing as a "service of the god" (22a)?

3. To what degree does Socrates see himself as wiser than others?

4. What does he mean when he says that "human wisdom is worth little or nothing" (23a-b)?
